Gatsby ch. 4-6 Passage

From chapters 4-6 choose one passage that you find interesting for whatever reason.  Perhaps it perplexes you, develops a character in an interesting way, seems to contain a symbol, or  has beautiful imagery.

Whatever your reason, type your passage (with page number) and then analyze and discuss the heck out of it.

The first few chapters of The Great Gatsby show Fitzgerald's depth of characterization.


Select one of the following main characters and identify two passages from the text that develop the character in two different ways (ex. one a physical description, one on the character's possessions or one of what the character says, one of what is said about the character). 

Please do not repeat passages that have been chosen, provide page numbers, and analyze the passages you choose.

Select ONE image, detail or symbol from this short story that you believe adds a layer of meaning or characterization.

Identify the image/detail/symbol and analyze the heck out of how it adds depth to the story.

Hawthorne Stories: "The Minister's Black Veil" & "The Birthmark"

After reading the two Hawthorne stories closely, write a post that is an analytical reaction to the two texts. Perhaps think about Romantic qualities, symbolism, characterization, the texts as allegories, the concept of sin...
Be sure that you include and discuss at least one quote in your response. You may find an interesting connection between an aspect of the stories or you can look at them separately.

Thesis Statement and Topic Sentence Points

Please put a lot of thought into these before posting!

Remember: The thesis needs to build, not simply list. It also needs to have a "so what point" that it builds up to.

It's up to you how many topic sentence points you have, but for a 6-8 page paper, I suggest at least 4. They should be listed in the order you plan on including them in the paper, they must cover the entire thesis, and they must not diverge from (but instead develop) your central argument.

Remember: Topic sentences need to be argumentative points, not facts.
